Christian Baptism

Water baptism is a beautiful and meaningful event in the life of every person who chooses to follow Jesus Christ. The practice of water baptism was commanded by Jesus, practiced by the apostles, and is intended for every believer. For nearly twenty centuries, baptism has been the universally-recognized point of identification for those who surrender their lives to Christ and identify with the body of believers known as the Church. Here are a few important facts about baptism.
Faith and Baptism in the Early Church
Historically, baptism was an immediate and intentional response to the gospel. According to the Scriptures, the proper candidate for baptism is someone who has placed his/her faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. After Phillip explained the good news about Jesus to the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:35-38, the eunuch asked Phillip, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” The eunuch understood the gospel and was then prepared to receive baptism. This passage reveals that a personal faith precedes baptism.
In the early church, water baptism was done by immersion, just as Jesus modeled for us. The word “baptizo” is derived from the Greek language and literally means to wash by immersion or plunging. This was the common practice in the New Testament and the form in which Jesus was baptized. (Mark 1:9)
Through these New Testament teachings, we can see that baptism is not only important, it is also an exciting opportunity for us to express our love for, and devotion to, Jesus by joining Him in this special celebration of our faith. There are many reasons for baptism as taught in the Scripture, but the greatest reason is simply that Jesus commanded it. That is the most compelling reason why you should consider this decision in your life today. Whether your baptism is occurring immediately after your profession of faith or after a long journey in Christ, our desire is to see that you enjoy the blessings of obedience in the practice of your Christian faith.
Your Baptism
Your decision to be baptized is a significant spiritual decision, one that will undoubtedly stand out as a defining moment in your spiritual life. We consider it a great blessing to join with you and to be a part of this wonderful celebration of your faith.
Methods of Baptism
Baptisms at Northpark Christian Church involves the total immersion of the candidate under water (immersion). Setting: Baptisms can be done in either a public or private setting. We encourage people to have their baptism during our weekend worship services, as it blesses our church body and it also serves as an example for others who need to take the step of receiving baptism.
Time of Baptism: Baptisms can take place any day of the week, at any time. During worship services, they are typically done near the end of the service.
Public Profession: Prior to being baptized, you will be asked to profess your faith in Christ by answering “Yes” to 2 questions: (1) Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God? And (2) Do you receive Him as your Savior and choose to follow Him as Lord?
What to Wear: You do not need to bring anything to your baptism. We have gowns, towels, and everything necessary for your baptism. However, some people are more comfortable wearing a swimsuit underneath their baptismal gown.
Decision Card: After your baptism, you will be asked to complete a decision card entitled: “My Spiritual Decision”. This card helps us to record your baptism and also allows you to declare your church membership intentions. We will provide you with a Certificate of Baptism which will be mailed to you shortly after the day of your baptism.
